Chase was nursing a glass of whiskey as he stood in the shadows of his own gallery's open house. Benjamin and the other artists in attendance were doing a good job keeping the would-be buyer happy and answering any questions they may of had. Chase should of been out on the floor with them, but his heart just wasn't in it that night. In fact, his heart hadn't been into much of anything since that disastrous texting session with Kyle. Ending things over a text message? Really? It felt like he was taking the cowards way out, but he honestly couldn't handle doing it face to face. The whole thing happened two weeks ago and neither man had said a word to one another since. "Hey boss." Nicole came up a long side him and offered small smile. "Hey Nicole." Chase tried, and failed, to give a convincing smile. Their relationship hadn't changed at all since the night of the three-some, and he was glad for that. "How is your night going?" "Sold one." She smiled, nodding to a young couple talking to Benjamin, probably finalizing the sale. "That's great, congratulations." Chase rubbed the top of her arm gently, and she uttered a soft 'thanks'. They stood in silence for a few minutes before Chase spoke up again. "Is Kyle here?" "Not sure, I haven't seen him yet if he was." Nicole said, glancing around the crowd as she spoke. He just nodded and sighed softly. Artist attendance was mandatory, of course, but encouraged if the artist had work up for sale, and he knew Kyle had a couple paintings up. "Alright," Chase pinched the bridge of his nose briefly. He was getting a headache. "I'm going to my office. Tell Ben to take messages and numbers if anyone wants to speak to me, please." "Yeah, sure." Nicole's gaze was concerned. "Are you okay." Chase just nodded and tried again for a convincing smile. He kissed her cheek softly before slipping away, pausing to refill his glass before continuing on to his office. He closed the door behind him and sank down into his chair, feeling exhausted already and it wasn't even midnight yet. He just wanted Kyle. |

A week had passed since that night after the first open house and Chase could notice a subtle change in his and Kyle's relationship. They were still without a label, but that was fine, they didn't need one. Chase couldn't pin point where the change was coming from and he was more then happy to just sit back and enjoy it. He even had a feeling that Kyle was no longer sleeping around. The gallery was also doing quite well. Paintings were being sold at a steady rate and new ones were taking their place, only to be sold within weeks. As an owner Chase was thrilled at the sales, and as an artist he was overwhelmed. People were buying his work, hanging it in their homes; he almost couldn't wrap his head around it. Chase was alone at the gallery that night, working on a new painting, and waiting on Kyle to get there. They had plans to go out for dinner, and then go back to Chase's for a evening of DVD's and sex in between. Or during, knowing them. He was working in the studio when he heard the bell above the door chimed, and Chase looked at his watch before getting up to quickly start cleaning up. Kyle was early. "I'll be right out." He yelled. He got no response, but that wasn't a big deal. Ten minutes later Chase was finished and he walked out into the main room. Whoever had come in wasn't Kyle. "Hey, sorry man, we're closed." He said to the man standing in the middle of the room. As he got closer, Chase could see the glazed over, unfocused look in the man's eyes, and judging by his dirty clothing, he wondered if he was just a homeless man seeking shelter from the heat outside. "Do you have any money?" The man asked suddenly, his voice slurring slightly, stepping closer to where Chase was standing at the front desk. "What? yeah, sure." The money box was open, but Chase dug into his pockets and pulled out some rumpled dollar bills. "Here you go." He held them out to the man, who had now rounded the back of the desk. The man took one hand out of his pockets and reached out, but instead of taking the money, he grabbed Chase's wrist, yanking him forward with a surprising amount of strength while at the same time taking his other hand out of his pocket. Chase saw a flash of silver before pain exploded up his side. He had just been stabbed. The blade withdrew before being slammed in once again, this time to the right, into his stomach. He fell to the ground, clutching his wounds, hands and clothes quickly becoming soaked in blood. He watched with blurry eyes as the man grabbed the money box and ran, the door chimes clinking seconds later. |

Once Kyle walked out of his apartment, Chase was determined not to look back as well. This included making a fresh start. At the end of the week he gave Adelle notice he was leaving and he used the two week grace period to start looking for a space of his own. Chase found his gallery by the end of the following week. Yeah finding it didn't take long, but Chase had a feeling about it that he just couldn't ignore. He left Adelle's quietly, notifying only a couple other people, and loyal clients. Kyle wasn't on that list. Chase honestly didn't even think the man would care that he was leaving. After the man left his apartment that night, Chase debated going after him, retrieving the camera, and destroying the evidence of what had happened. But part of him knew Kyle wouldn't spread them around, not when the pictures only made him look like the guilty one. As the days went by and no pictures popped up, Chase was pleased that he was correct in his assumption. Between working on a new painting and redoing the gallery into something he was happy with, Chase had no time to think about much else. Leana stopped seeing him, annoyed that he wasn't giving he enough attention, and all the drama with Kyle even faded from his memory. Two months later and Chase was finally where he wanted to be; successful in both painting and photography, and both loves displayed in his very own gallery. A gallery that became more successful with each passing day. That night he was hosting his first open house, inviting everyone he knew and sparing no expense on the alcohol served. Dressed casually in black slacks and a white button down, sleeves rolled up to mid-forearm, Chase wandered around through the crowd, making sure to say hello to everyone. |

Chase liked open houses better then gallery events much better because they were a lot more relaxed and casual. All the regular clients were invited, but since it was an open-door event, there was no alcohol. That was the only part Chase hated. Adele liked having these things because it always generated new business and cleared out a lot of their stock. Chase wandered around the gallery, arms crossed casually behind him. There was a young couple looking at one of his older paintings, and he stopped to talk to them. It was only then that he saw Kyle from the corner of his eye, and the sight made his stomach clench. After the man yesterday morning, he tried to distract himself by working on the photographs from the night before, but he couldn't focus. He was a people pleaser and he hated that Kyle didn't enjoy things as much as he should of. He wanted a second chance, before any progress he had made slipped out the window. |
